August 21, 1983. An unusually hot August Sunday will play host to a historic day that will live in infamy. Returning to the Philippines after a three-year exile in the United States, Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., or “Ninoy” as Filipinos fondly call him, flew aboard China Airlines flight 811 from Taipei to Manila. Flight CI811 touched down at 1:04pm. Soldiers escorted Aquino from the cabin to the jetbridge at Gate 8. As Aquino was getting off the service stairs of Gate 8, he was shot. Whoever shot him and who masterminded the crime remains a controversy and a mystery up to this day.
In 1987, MNL was named after the late senator.
B-1836 is one of the only two Boeing 767s in China Airlines’ fleet. 1836 and sistership B-1838 were both acquired in 1983 and left the fleet in 1989.
Here, B-1836 is seen approaching MNL’s runway 06 on that fateful day in 1983. By this moment, Senator Aquino is praying the last few beads of his rosary.

Meet the Fokkers.
Philippine Air Force - PZL W-3A Sokol (310921) met an untimely end today. 921 was supposed to be a backup helicopter of the interior and defence secretaries on a working tour in Mindanao. The chopper crashed in the city of Marawi. All the parties, including both pilots of the crashed chopper, are safe.
Here is 921 seen in better days. This photograph was taken shortly after 921 and her sistership were delivered.
Golf Yankee is one of the only two A320s in the China Airlines fleet (along with Golf Zulu). The A320s didn’t last long with the airline though. China Airlines had a short affair with the mini Airbus from 1992 to 1996.
Here’s what planespotters in Manila would’ve seen in the early 1990s. Golf Yankee taxis to runway 06 as a Cathay Pacific L1011 TriStar precedes her.
